The steps listed below must be followed to insure proper adhesion to the
plastic derby bodies. In following these steps, you will have enough material to
do 2 or 3 cars. It would be a good idea to do cars in a group with others,
cutting the cost per car down.
Step 1: Wash the body,
inside and out, with hot water and SEM soap part #39362.
Step
2: Using a gray scruff pad (3M part #7448) clean the body with SEM
brand plastic prep, part #38354. The scuff pad is only used for cleaning
purposes, you should not sand the body. Sand scratches could show up in the
final finish. Do 2' square areas wiping the plastic prep off before it has a
chance to dry by itself.
Step 3: Repeat step
2.
Step 4: Spray the body with one light to medium coat
of SEM flexible adhesion promoter part #39863. Let the adhesion promoter dry at
least 15 minutes but no more than 30.
Step 5: Use a
flexible primer of your choice it will take several coats to fill the pinholes
in the body. The body is very porous.
Step 6: Use the
topcoat of your choice. If you use an automotive finish, you must use a flexible
additive in the paint. Ask your paint supplier for instructions to refinish
flexible parts. The instructions may vary per paint brand.
